Bangkok: Suchart Chomklin, a Bhumjaithai Party MP for Chonburi, has ordered the withdrawal of a defamation lawsuit against Ms. Hathairat Phaholthap, editor-in-chief of The Isaan Record. The lawsuit was initially filed regarding a report on alleged bribery of berry pickers. Suchart insists that the withdrawal is not an attempt to silence the media but a call for impartial reporting.
According to Thai News Agency, Suchart explained that the legal action was initially taken during the election period to protect his rights, as the report negatively impacted his image during the campaign. However, after reviewing the media outlet's explanation that the information was based on the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) procedures, he instructed his lawyers to withdraw the lawsuit on March 23rd.
Suchart emphasized the importance of media in presenting both sides of a story comprehensively and impartially. He stated his dedication to transparency and his commitment to improving labour welfare during his time as Minister of Labour. He expressed his willingness to let the legal process unfold without holding any animosity towards media outlets that report in good faith.
