Teng Calls on Prime Minister to Take Responsibility for Crane Accident

Bangkok: "Teng" has urged the Prime Minister to assume responsibility for the crane collapse incident that occurred in Sikhiu District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, highlighting it as a reflection of deficiencies in the government's procurement system.

According to Thai News Agency, Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, has emphasized the necessity of holding contractors accountable and ensuring that conflicts of interest do not lead to leniency in punitive measures. This follows social media posts depicting Anutin Charnvirakul with a representative from a Chinese company involved in a contract, raising concerns about transparency.

Mr. Nattapong commented on the tragic accident where a crane fell onto a train, resulting in numerous casualties. He noted that similar incidents have occurred in the past, indicating a need for more effective preventive measures. He referenced Mr. Suphanat Meenchainan, a party candidate, who suggested that the government should downgrade contractors engaging in substandard construction. However, Mr. Nattapong expressed concern that insufficient actions have been taken historically.

Mr. Nattapong stated, "Today's event is an indicator that reflects the fact that, in the past, the government's procurement system has not been implemented to a higher standard, such as punishing contractors who construct below standard, and making government procurement more transparent."

When questioned about Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's reprimand of the State Railway of Thailand governor, Mr. Nattapong expressed skepticism about a mere reprimand resolving the issue. He believes that the Prime Minister should demonstrate leadership by taking concrete measures to prevent future incidents. This includes investigating the contracting company's history for any previous similar incidents and taking firm disciplinary action if necessary.

Addressing concerns about potential conflicts of interest involving contract signings with Mr. Anutin and the contracting company, Mr. Nattapong called for transparency. He stressed the importance of separating conflicts of interest from government projects and ensuring appropriate penalties are enforced. Mr. Nattapong remarked that criticism alone is insufficient, and decisive action against those involved is necessary.
