Thai Army Addresses Construction Gaps in Thai-Cambodian Border Fence

Pong nam ron: A spokesperson for the Thai army explained that the gap in the border fence at Pong Nam Ron is still under construction.

According to Thai News Agency, the clarification came in response to images circulating on social media that displayed significant gaps in the Thai-Cambodian border fence in Pong Nam Ron District, Chanthaburi Province. These images raised questions about the effectiveness of the fence, which is intended for security purposes.

Major General Witai Laythomya, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Armed Forces, elaborated on the construction process, noting that the gaps are a result of ongoing work. He emphasized that the concrete panels and steel frames used in the fence are prefabricated and designed for quick installation. The construction involves assembling the panels and frames section by section to expedite the process. In certain areas, however, the panels did not align perfectly, necessitating the addition of extra panels and reinforced steel frames to ensure strength and fill any gaps.

Major General Witai clarified that the images did not depict the construction of entrances or gates but rather an incomplete connection of the border wall. He explained that the fence is being built along the Thai-Cambodian border in Pong Nam Ron District, strategically positioned between border markers without infringing on the sovereignty of either nation. The construction is designed for flexibility, with panels that can be easily assembled and disassembled using hinges, allowing for border marker inspections when required.

The project, which spans over 1.3 kilometers, is approximately 40% complete and is projected to be finished by June of this year.
