Bangkok: The Minister of Digital Economy and Society held an urgent meeting with the police to finalize measures to prevent the spread of inappropriate content during live streams on Facebook.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chaiyanok Chidchob, the Minister of Digital Economy and Society, chaired the meeting focused on developing strategies to prevent and suppress offenses committed through social media platforms, particularly those involving obscene live broadcasts. The meeting, which included key stakeholders such as Dr. Chaichana Mitrphan, Director of the Electronic Transactions Development Agency; Pol. Maj. Gen. Niwes Apawasin, Deputy Commander of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau; and Pol. Maj. Gen. Chananat Sarathavalyaepae, Commander of the Cyber Crime Suppression Division, also saw the participation of representatives from Meta, Facebook's parent company, in Thailand.
The Minister disclosed that the meeting aimed to establish preventive and suppressive measures in collaboration with both legal authorities and the platform itself. This follows a multi-hour live stream incident that raised significant concerns. Continuous coordination meetings have been held to address the issue effectively.
Reports indicate that the meeting will hasten the implementation of strategies and discussions with the Cyber Police following an investigation into the URL and individuals linked to the controversial clip. Should any individuals be identified as Thai nationals or residents, they will face prosecution under the Computer Crime Act for importing obscene content into a computer system. Concurrently, the platform will be engaged to understand why their system failed to promptly detect and block the content, despite its widespread viewership.
