Thai Innovation Extends Shelf Life of Fresh Produce with New Edible Coating

Bangkok: Thai researchers are at the forefront of developing an innovative edible coating that aims to address a significant challenge within the food industry-extending the shelf life of freshly cut vegetables and fruits. This new Thai innovation not only enhances product longevity but also adds value to agricultural products, marking a significant advancement for the industry.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anukul Prueksanusak, Deputy Government Spokesperson, announced that the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI), in collaboration with the Thai Packaging Center (TACC) and the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR), spearheaded the development of this edible coating. This technological breakthrough is designed to maintain the freshness of fruits and vegetables over extended periods, reduce mold and spoilage, and prevent undesirable color changes, all while ensuring consumer safety. Furthermore, this innovation contributes to reducing food waste and promoting environmentally friendly consumption practices.

The edible coating offers multiple benefits for both entrepreneurs and consumers. It effectively reduces bacterial contamination, preserves nutritional value, and extends the shelf life of products by acting as a barrier against moisture and oxygen. This prolongation of freshness minimizes product weight loss and spoilage. Additionally, the biodegradable nature of the coatings helps decrease reliance on environmentally harmful plastic packaging. The coating can also be enhanced with flavors or scents, adding market value and appeal to the products.

Mr. Anukul emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing the agricultural sector through targeted investments and research support, ultimately leading to high-value products. Entrepreneurs and farmers interested in utilizing these edible coatings can obtain more information and services from the Thai Packaging Center, TISTR.
