Thai Prime Minister Discusses Peace Efforts with Chinese Special Envoy Amid Thai-Cambodian Tensions

Bangkok: The Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, announced that he had engaged in discussions with the Chinese special envoy, affirming that no pressure was exerted on him during the talks. He emphasized the goal of fostering peace in the region.

According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior revealed details of his meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Zhang Jianwei and Chinese Ambassador and Special Representative for Asia Affairs Deng Xijun. The discussions centered on the ongoing Thai-Cambodian conflict, with the Chinese envoy having already met with the Cambodian side before engaging with Thai representatives. China, acting as a mediator, expressed a desire to prevent further conflict in the region.

Mr. Anutin clarified Thailand's stance, noting that the Chinese representatives did not seek agreement but aimed to establish peace, contingent on four conditions outlined by Thailand. He refrained from disclosing specific details of the discussions, considering it inappropriate to reveal such information. The discussions acknowledged the current situation and the direction being pursued, with no unexpected developments.

Addressing the situation on the Thai-Cambodian border, Mr. Anutin commended the Thai army for their dedication in defending the nation's sovereignty. He acknowledged the costs and losses incurred but reaffirmed the commitment to their goals. He urged the public to support the soldiers and officials, highlighting their dedication and the public's cooperation in remaining within government-provided safe accommodations, which facilitates the officials' operations.

During discussions in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the Prime Minister noted that Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew was in a meeting and was expected to report back upon his return. He emphasized that the issues between Thailand and Cambodia are bilateral.

For villagers affected by the tensions, the Prime Minister assured that visits from officials to provide encouragement and prioritize their safety in shelters were planned. This reassurance aims to address concerns among those defending the nation's sovereignty. The government provided reasons for all actions taken and expressed determination to restore normalcy swiftly, with the military aware of the necessary steps.

On compensation matters, the Prime Minister confirmed that full compensation has been provided, stressing that this issue is not negotiable. He stated that the government is prepared to propose a central budget allocation for consideration by the Election Commission, which is aware of its necessity.
