Thailand Election Commission Enhances Communication Skills of Provincial Directors

Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) is providing intensive training to provincial ECT directors to improve public relations work. The ECT recently conducted a training session aimed at enhancing public relations and communication skills among its provincial directors. This initiative is a response to the criticism following the recent election, which challenged the ECT's credibility. The training focuses on improving crisis management operations and enabling provincial officials to deliver immediate explanations in their jurisdictions. According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Saweang Boonmee, the Secretary-General of the Election Commission, inaugurated the second training course designed to develop digital-savvy public relations communicators. This event took place from March 16-18, 2026, and was attended by 45 participants, including directors from the Northern, Northeastern, and Southern regions, alongside ECT office executives. The program featured Mr. Kasemsan Veerakul, a strategic communicatio n advisor, who led workshops on public speaking, situational analysis, and communication strategies, equipping participants with practical skills for their roles. Mr. Saeng highlighted that this training program is a joint effort between the ECT and the Department of Public Relations. Recognizing the importance of social media, the ECT aims to improve its communication proficiency, an area where it currently lacks. This second training session targets central executives and provincial directors, focusing on enhancing their ability to communicate with approximately 50 million eligible voters and various network members. The training intends to empower ECT staff with the skills needed to provide clear and concise explanations of their operations to the public. The ECT faced criticism during the recent election due to communication lapses that led to public misunderstandings. Mr. Saeng noted that earlier training could have been advantageous in effectively communicating the EC's electoral processes and actions . However, he remains optimistic that the current training will prepare provincial directors to address any issues during elections in their regions promptly. By sharing responsibilities with the central office, provincial ECs can ensure accurate and timely explanations of incidents, with the central office providing a wider context. Ms. Saewang emphasized that the project has equipped directors with enhanced communication techniques. While the foundational information regarding regulations and procedures remains unchanged, the newfound clarity and shared responsibility will enable provinces to offer swift explanations, necessitating coordinated internal public relations efforts.
