Thepthai Uncovers 5 Billion Baht Corruption in Local Government Recruitment Exam

Phuket: Thepthai Senpong has brought to light a significant corruption scandal involving a 5 billion baht scheme linked to the local government recruitment examination, identifying three distinct groups of victims in the process.

According to Thai News Agency, Thepthai Senpong, a well-known political observer, detailed the corruption on his Facebook page, "Thepthai - Political Talk." The scandal revolves around the Department of Local Administration's recruitment exams for civil servants and local government employees. The investigation has revealed that the victims, who were charged between 350,000 to 800,000 baht each, can be classified into three groups.

The first group consists of individuals linked to political networks. These individuals often have connections to high-ranking officials and politicians and enjoy support from influential political figures. Many in this group reportedly passed the exam without significant financial expenditure or, if they did pay, it was minimal.

The second group includes villagers aspiring to government service who could afford the bribes. Lacking connections, they became victims of the corruption, often contacted by brokers or political campaigners with quotas from corruption networks.

The third group comprises academically capable individuals who lacked confidence in passing the exams. Brokers exploited these individuals, charging them for guaranteed success, only to scam them out of their money.

Despite the gravity of the issue, there is uncertainty about the government's response. While there have been actions like transferring the Director-General of the Department of Local Administration and cancelling the examination program, inconsistencies remain. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that only those involved in corruption would face investigation, while innocent individuals would be protected.

This situation highlights the government's inconsistent approach, raising concerns about whether the issue will fade without addressing the masterminds. Society remains apprehensive about the potential for justice in this matter.
