Thirachai Urges Prime Minister to Accelerate Justice for Police Officer’s Death Case

Bangkok: Thirachai Phanthumas, a Bangkok MP from the Prachachon Party, has called upon Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra to expedite the process of bringing Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya to justice. Thirachai highlighted that the recent court ruling against individuals for altering witness statements in the case involving Yoovidhya confirms wrongdoing, urging swift action from the authorities.

According to Thai News Agency, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases recently ruled on the case involving the alteration of witness statements regarding the speed of a car driven by Vorayuth Yoovidhya. The accused, Yoovidhya, was involved in a collision with Pol. Sgt. Maj. Wichian Klanprasert, resulting in the officer's death. Imprisonments were handed down to Mr. Chainarong Saengthong-aram and Mr. Net Naksuk for offenses related to corruption, while a detention warrant remains for the remaining defendants pending appeal.

Mr. Thirachai expressed his dissatisfaction with the current progress, pointing out that despite court rulings, there has been a lack of effective tracking of Yoovidhya. He revealed that he had uncovered information suggesting Yoovidhya had frequented a resort on Lokara Island, Fiji, in 2020-2021. This information has been passed on to relevant authorities, but Thirachai noted a sluggish response in pursuing further investigation.

Thirachai emphasized the need for the government to actively pursue justice, urging Prime Minister Shinawatra to leverage her position and connections to ensure the case reaches a resolution. He stressed the importance of accountability, asserting that the government must not remain indifferent as police officers and the public demand closure.

Thirachai also mentioned that previous efforts to seek information from embassies have been unproductive. He suggested that a broader scope of investigation into the business holdings related to Yoovidhya could potentially yield better results in bringing him to justice.
