Transgender Hormone Medication Now Included in Universal Healthcare

Bangkok: Good news for transgender individuals as "transgender hormone medication" becomes available under the universal healthcare scheme. It is set to be procured and accessible starting this June.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Ploytalay Laksmisangchan, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the government is advancing comprehensive healthcare for all demographics. A new benefit for "hormone therapy for gender confirmation" is being introduced to alleviate the financial burden on transgender individuals, ensuring their safe inclusion in the healthcare system. This initiative will cover hormone medication, laboratory testing, and holistic care, with distribution expected to commence on June 10, 2026, across 50 service units.

Ms. Ploytalee explained that gender reassignment services are currently part of the National Health Security Scheme (NHSS) benefits, and hormone medications have already been procured under this scheme. The eight types of "hormone-based gender confirmation" medications are categorized into four main groups: female hormones (oral and topical), male hormones (injectable), male hormone blockers (oral), and central hormone suppressant injections. Additionally, the benefits encompass health check-ups, mental health counseling, and laboratory tests, including screenings for general health, hormone levels, liver function, kidney function, and metabolic systems.

Ms. Ploytalee also emphasized that all service units, including private clinics operated by civil society organizations, public health centers in Bangkok, and select government hospitals, should adhere to public announcements from the National Health Security Office and relevant government bodies. She cautioned that hormone therapy may have side effects on overall physical and mental health, potentially leading to future health issues. Therefore, comprehensive consultation and continuous care from experts are crucial before starting hormone therapy.
