Truck Transporting Cucumbers Conceals Illegal Myanmar Workers at Thai Border

Mae Sot: Security officials intercepted a truck carrying cucumbers that had been used to conceal four illegal foreign workers at the Mae Sot border in Tak Province. The incident occurred as Myanmar workers were reported to be continuously entering the region illegally.

According to Thai News Agency, military personnel from the Rajamanu Task Force, in collaboration with the Naresuan Task Force's drug suppression patrol unit, Mae Sot Police Station, and the Mae Sot District Administration, set up a checkpoint at Ban Huai Hin Fon, Village No. 6, Mae Pa Subdistrict, Mae Sot District, Tak Province. During this operation, they discovered four illegal Myanmar workers hidden within a grey Isuzu cucumber transport vehicle.

The driver, identified as Mr. Phubodin, 48, confessed to authorities that he had picked up the four Myanmar nationals and concealed them in the cucumber truck. His plan was to transport them from Ban Sao O, Tambon Chong Khaep, Amphoe Phop Phra, Tak Province, to their intended destination in Bangkok for a fee of 20,000 baht. The soldiers from the Rajamanu Task Force and Mae Sot Police subsequently took the individuals into custody and sent them to the Tak Immigration Checkpoint (Mae Sot Checkpoint) for legal proceedings.

In a related operation in Phop Phra District, Tak Province, Col. Natthakorn Ruenthip, Commander of the Rajamanu Task Force, ordered military officers from the task force to work with police officers from Phop Phra Police Station and the Phop Phra District Administration. Their joint efforts led to the arrest of 29 Myanmar migrant workers, along with two Thai guides and two pickup trucks, as they attempted to smuggle migrant workers across the Moei River on the Thai-Myanmar border.

The arrested migrant workers, who were found crossing the border illegally, admitted to traveling from Myawaddy District, Karen State, Myanmar. They had each paid a broker 15,000 baht to facilitate their illegal entry into Thailand. The military, police, and administrative officers have taken all involved parties into custody, forwarding them to the investigation officer at Phop Phra Police Station for further legal action. The continuous influx and subsequent arrests of foreign workers indicate they are driven by unemployment and poverty, seeking work opportunities in Thailand.
