Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Greenland Dispute as European Nations Deploy Troops

Washington: U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose tariffs on countries that oppose his plan to seize Greenland, while European nations are sending troops to participate in military exercises on the island at Denmark's request. The US leader remains relentless in his efforts to seize control of Greenland. Most recently, Trump threatened to impose increased import tariffs on countries that do not support the US plan to occupy Greenland, including Greenland itself. He stated that if Greenland does not cooperate with the US, it will face similar tariffs.

According to Thai News Agency, President Trump reiterated the necessity of securing Greenland for U.S. security. He stated that without Greenland, the U.S. would face a significant vulnerability in its national defense. At the same time, the U.S. leader also mentioned that discussions regarding Greenland are ongoing with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), but did not disclose further details.

President Trump's desire to occupy Greenland has raised concerns among NATO allies that the Danish autonomous territory could be attacked by the US military, similar to what happened in Venezuela. This prompted Denmark to request that allied nations send troops to participate in military exercises on Greenland. Several countries have already begun deploying troops, with personnel from Germany, Norway, and Sweden arriving on Friday local time, though in small numbers.

French President Emmanuel Macron revealed on Thursday that the first contingent of troops had been deployed to Greenland and that more would be sent in the coming days, including army, navy, and air force personnel.
