Used Car Dealer Sells Gasoline at 7 Baht per Tank to Aid Villagers

Udon thani: In a remarkable act of community support, a used car dealership owner in Udon Thani took a unique approach to assist local residents by selling gasoline at an astonishing price of just 7 baht per full tank. The initiative, aimed at alleviating financial burdens, drew significant attention as people lined up for the opportunity to fill their tanks at this dramatically reduced price. The fuel supply was exhausted within just five hours, underscoring the high demand and the impact of this gesture.

According to Thai News Agency, the dealership owner, known as "Sia Le," organized this initiative not for profit but as a means to support those struggling to make ends meet. He hired a company to supply the fuel, focusing especially on aiding low-income villagers and motorcycle taxi drivers. Despite investing hundreds of thousands of baht, the sale generated a modest return of only 3,622 baht, highlighting the owner's altruistic intentions.

The unusual sale sparked various reactions and inquiries, with some people questioning the legality of the operation. Concerns were raised about potential accusations of hoarding fuel or tax evasion. However, Sia Le clarified that his actions were driven by a desire to help the community rather than financial gain. He acknowledged that while creating a positive image and content was part of his motivation, he was prepared to face any legal repercussions if necessary.

The Department of Commerce reviewed the situation and concluded that it did not constitute commercial trading, as it was a one-time sale with no inflated pricing. Meanwhile, the Provincial Energy Office noted that an inspection would typically require stored oil, but since all the gasoline was sold within hours, no further action was necessary. Reassured by these clarifications, Sia Le expressed relief and mentioned plans for a potential second phase of the initiative. Should gasoline prices reach 60 baht per liter, he intends to repeat the event, possibly introducing a donation box for voluntary contributions from those filling their tanks.
