Volunteer Defense Corps Member Shot in Ambush in Narathiwat

Narathiwat: An assailant ambushed and shot a volunteer defense corps member in Narathiwat, seriously injuring him. An unknown number of assailants on motorcycles ambushed and shot a volunteer territorial defense officer, seriously injuring him while he was returning from duty at the Dusongnyo Subdistrict Protection Unit.

According to Thai News Agency, the ambush shooting occurred at approximately 7:30 AM on May 13, 2026, in Moo 5, Ban Ka Ya, Dusongnyo Subdistrict, Chanae District, Narathiwat Province. The injured individual was identified as Mr. Afannee Cheteh, a 40-year-old member of the Dusongnyo Subdistrict Volunteer Defense Corps. At the time of the incident, Mr. Afannee was returning from duty to pick up his car at his wife's house in Ban Katoh, Moo 6, Dusongnyo Subdistrict. During his journey, an unknown number of assailants approached him on a pink Yamaha Filano motorcycle and opened fire with an unidentified firearm before fleeing towards Ban Nam Wan, Moo 1, Chang Phueak Subdistrict, Chanae District.

Mr. Afannee sustained five gunshot wounds: three to his right thigh, one to his right hip, and one to his right finger. Despite his injuries, he initially remained conscious. Officials and Good Samaritans assisted in transporting him to Narathiwat Ratchanakarin Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery to remove the bullets. In response to the attack, security forces have set up checkpoints along suspected escape routes, and a forensic team has been deployed to the scene to gather evidence and review CCTV footage in an effort to apprehend the perpetrators. The motive behind the attack is still under investigation, with authorities exploring possibilities ranging from an attempt to create unrest to a personal dispute.
