Wisut Chainarun Urges Opposition to Amend No-Confidence Motion for Debate

Bangkok: Mr. Wisut Chainarun, the government whip, has expressed concerns over the opposition party’s refusal to amend their no-confidence motion against the government, which has led to a delay in setting a debate date. He emphasized that the responsibility lies with the opposition and the President of the House of Representatives, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, to resolve the issue.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wisut pointed out that if the opposition does not amend the motion as ruled by Mr. Wan Noor, it cannot be included in the agenda. He highlighted that this situation is not due to any obstruction from the government MPs but is a matter that the opposition must clarify with the House President. Mr. Wisut mentioned a historical precedent involving Mr. Chuan Leekpai, suggesting that the opposition should find a way to comply to ensure a smooth debate process.

Mr. Wisut also addressed the opposition’s urgency motion concerning the impact of a high-speed rail project, asserting that it is a separate issue from the no-confidence debate. He reaffirmed that the government is prepared for the debate, noting that the Prime Minister is ready to answer any questions. Mr. Wisut dismissed claims that the government is delaying the no-confidence motion, stating it is up to the opposition and the House Speaker to amend the motion.

Regarding the opposition’s intention to retain Thaksin Shinawatra’s name in the motion, Mr. Wisut questioned their commitment to the no-confidence debate. He reiterated that without amendments, the debate cannot proceed and emphasized that it is the opposition’s responsibility to follow the House Speaker’s guidance.

Mr. Wisut also responded to allegations that Mr. Wan Nor abused his power by removing Mr. Thaksin’s name from the motion, suggesting that the decision was likely made after thorough consultation with the legal department. He clarified that his stance is not about defending Mr. Thaksin but about adhering to parliamentary procedures. The government is ready to address all questions if the debate is included in the agenda, he assured.
