Bangkok: Worasit Liengprasit, Deputy Minister of Interior, has publicly challenged the opposition and iLaw to produce evidence of alleged collusion involving his father, Somkiat Liengprasit, in the Senate election. He questioned the ease with which the allegations were made, suggesting that if any concrete evidence exists, it should be submitted to the authorities.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Worasit responded to claims presented by a witness in the Senate collusion case, which implicated his father, known as "Go Kiat." The witness alleged a formula for selecting senators that promised a government position for Worasit's son if successful. Mr. Worasit dismissed the allegations, questioning their simplicity and fairness, and revealed that his father plans to file a police report regarding the statements.
Mr. Worasit also addressed whether the allegations were part of a political smear campaign. He stated that he is uncertain about the motives and suggested that it might be an attempt to divert attention or serve another unknown purpose.
In response to the opposition's claim that only 5% of the evidence has been revealed, with the remaining 95% possibly being unsubstantiated, Mr. Worasit stated that these questions should be directed to the opposition. He emphasized that the matter has been ongoing for over a year and if genuine evidence exists, it should be presented to the authorities rather than to him or the media.
Regarding potential collusion among senators and its portrayal as political rhetoric, Mr. Worasit remarked that such activities have historically occurred.
When questioned about conversations with his father, Mr. Worasit confirmed discussions but noted nothing significant transpired. He also dismissed the opposition's challenge for more information and their assertion that he would concede if the claims proved true, stating, "What are you talking about? It hasn't happened yet. The situation isn't like that, that's all."
