8th National Senior Games “Tapi Games” Officially Open with Grand Ceremony and Sporting Events

Surat thani: The 8th National Senior Games, popularly known as the "Tapi Games," have officially commenced, bringing together 6,043 senior athletes and officials from across the country. They are competing for a remarkable total of 845 gold medals across 15 different sports disciplines.

According to Thai News Agency, the opening ceremony was held at the Surat Thani Provincial Stadium, presided over by Ms. Natthariya Thaweewong, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The event was attended by prominent figures including Dr. Kongsak Yodmani, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT), Mr. Jumphot Wannachatsiri, Governor of Surat Thani Province, along with SAT executives, athletes, referees, officials, and local residents. The ceremony showcased the rich arts and culture of Southern Thailand through three performances, promoting friendship and unity among the participants. The highlight was a grand parade of athletes and the lighting of the Olympic flame by three distinguished torchbearers: Sergeant Major Sitthiporn Sangthong, Ms. Jutamas Khonkhum, and Ms. Phakamas Rattanabut.

Ms. Natthariya expressed her admiration for the athletes' unity and readiness, emphasizing the Ministry's commitment to advancing national sports in line with its objectives. Dr. Kongsak Yodmani highlighted the SAT's efforts in promoting and developing athletes across all age groups, aiming for excellence at both national and international levels through various national games.

One of the standout moments of the competition was the men's shot put event in the 100-104 age group, featuring Mr. Sawang Chanphram, a celebrated senior athlete. At 106 years old, Mr. Sawang participated in shot put, discus throw, and javelin throw, despite undergoing recent eye surgery, showcasing his enduring spirit and securing a gold medal with a shot put distance of 3.47 meters.

Today's program promises an exciting array of events with 164 gold medals at stake, including 79 in swimming, 77 in athletics, and others in shooting, petanque, and gateball.
