Bangkok: The government insists it will not remove barbed wire on the Thai-Cambodian border, but will only add more.
According to Thai News Agency, the government has confirmed that there will be no removal of barbed wire on the Thai-Cambodian border, but rather that it will be added within Thai sovereignty. It emphasized that reports of the removal are fake news intended to stir up dissent and urged that they not be shared or disseminated. Meanwhile, the RBC Cambodia border meeting has requested a postponement to August 27.
Mr. Jirayu Huangsap, spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office and a member of the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Administration (TCASA), clarified the news report alleging that Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, acting as Prime Minister, would order the removal of barbed wire along the Thai-Cambodian border following a meeting of the Regional Border Committee (RBC). The report stated that the news is false and unfounded. There is no intention to remove it, but rather to gradually add more wire within Thai sovereignty.
The news was spread by some pages, who intentionally manipulated the situation to gain likes and followers through distortion and false narratives. They claimed that the government would convene a meeting of the National Security Council (NSC) and propose the removal of all barbed wire fences along the border. This is untrue, as the border situation remains in accordance with the ceasefire agreement after midnight on July 28th, which states "stay where you are," and Thailand must maintain its sovereignty. Therefore, barbed wire fencing is a necessary measure to assert its territorial rights. The government emphasized that it would not be swayed by incitement or pressure from any party. It reiterated that the government would not remove the barbed wire fences along the entire border in seven provinces, but would instead add more.
Mr. Jirayu stated that the Thai-Cambodian Border Situation Administration Center (TCSA) had been informed by Cambodia that the extraordinary RBC meeting of the Second Army Region had been postponed from August 21, 2025, to August 27, 2025, to allow for more time for preparation. Second Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang informed Army Commander-in-Chief Gen. Pana Klaewplodthuk, who did not object and agreed to the postponement of the meeting as requested by Cambodia.
The 2nd Army Area has scheduled the new discussions as follows: 1) 25-26 August 2025: Secretariat meeting 2) 27 August 2025: RBC extraordinary meeting 3) Meeting location: Central area around the Chong Sangam permanent border crossing, said Mr. Jirayu.
