Suvarnabhumi Airport Celebrates 19 Years As Thailand’s Key Aviation Hub

Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi Airport has celebrated its 19th anniversary as Thailand's main aviation hub, serving more than 878 million passengers, 5.45 million flights, and over 20 million tons of cargo, reflecting its role in driving the economy, transportation, and tourism, and developing into a world-class hospitality airport that combines modern technology, upgraded facilities, and services that meet international standards.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Kittipong Kittikachorn, General Manager of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT), stated that on September 28, 2025, Suvarnabhumi Airport (SA) will celebrate its 19th anniversary as Thailand's primary airport and a key aviation hub in Southeast Asia. It serves as a gateway to Thailand, connecting passengers from around the world and driving the country's economy, transportation, and tourism. Since its opening on September 28, 2006, SAOT has handled a total of 878.65 million passengers, 5.45 million flights, and 20.62 million tons of cargo, reflecting the country's role as a transportation infrastructure. In fiscal year 2025 alone (October 2024 - August 2025), 126 airlines operated a total of 340,670 flights, a 7% increase from the previous year. Passenger numbers reached 58.1 million, a 4.91% increase, reflecting the recovery and confidence of airlines and travelers worldwide.

Mr. Kittipong stated that Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is committed to developing service quality in line with the concept of a "World-Class Hospitality Airport." The airport not only boasts a large infrastructure or modern technology but also offers convenience, safety, and a memorable experience for passengers. This includes the use of digital systems to facilitate check-in, security screening, and specialized services for groups such as the elderly, the disabled, and families. Furthermore, Suvarnabhumi Airport prioritizes the environment through energy conservation measures to ensure balanced and sustainable growth. This commitment has led to Suvarnabhumi Airport's international recognition, with the airport being upgraded from a 3-star airport to a 4-star airport by Skytrax, a leading global airline and airport quality rating consultancy based in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, Suvarnabhumi Airport was ranked by Brilliant Maps as the busiest airport in the world. Furthermore, a report by ACI Asia-Pacific a nd Middle East (ACI APAC and MID), in collaboration with PwC, ranked Suvarnabhumi Airport 7th among the most potential connectivity hubs and 9th among the most connected airports in 2024.

For fiscal year 2026, Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) expects a total of approximately 397,323 flights and 67.7 million passengers, with new airlines such as United Airlines (Las Vegas - Hong Kong - Bangkok route). Although the summer flight allocation has not yet been finalized, it is a positive sign reflecting Suvarnabhumi Airport's potential as a regional aviation hub.

Meanwhile, the trend of passengers from the European Union (EU) continues to expand due to Thai Airways' re-launching of various routes to Europe to enhance connectivity in line with the government's Aviation Hub policy. Furthermore, the continuous growth of passengers from India helps reduce the risk of relying solely on the Chinese market. In the future, AOT remains confident that Thailand will be able to add more direct routes to the United States after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) upgraded Thailand's status to Category 1 (CAT1) for the first time in 10 years from Category 2 (CAT2). This reflects the FAA's confidence in the safety of Thai civil aviation agencies in complying with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety standards, allowing Thai and international airlines to expand their long-haul routes to their full potential.

Mr. Kittipong stated that Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) continues to improve facilities within the passenger terminal and concourses to enhance the passenger travel experience. Several key projects include the renovation of activity areas for departing passengers during boarding, both in Concourses C and F and Concourse 1 (SAT-1). These include the addition of a Kids Zone, Game Station, and relaxation areas such as a Recliner Area (reclining seats), a Co-Working Space, a Piano Lounge, and a Digital Park. Furthermore, the airport is installing 203 electronic device chargers, up from the current 132. Furthermore, the airport is renovating 124 restrooms in both the passenger terminal and concourses, all of which are expected to be completed by 2028.

In addition, in terms of service and safety, the Airports of Thailand (AOT) has added a Passenger Validation System (PVS) and upgraded its X-ray machines to CT scanners for faster and more accurate scanning. Furthermore, the Automated Border Control (ABC) system has been developed to support e-passports, ensuring greater passenger convenience.

Mr. Kittipong stated that, alongside enhancing passenger services, Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is also continuously driving the expansion of its air cargo capacity. In addition to developing the Freezone Smart Access system, a duty-free zone entry and exit management system to address congestion caused by over 8,000 cargo vehicles per day, reducing delays in receiving and delivering cargo, and preventing missed flights, Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is also prioritizing the growth of e-commerce and the global market. The airport plans to add a third warehouse operator in 2028 to enhance its capacity to handle the growing volume of cargo and advance Thailand's role as a trade and investment hub in the ASEAN region.

The 19th anniversary is a milestone reflecting the success, confidence, and growth of Suvarnabhumi Airport in every aspect. Entering its 20th year marks a step towards elevating the airport from "the gateway to Thailand" to "a world-class hospitality airport," ready to welcome passengers from around the world with international standards. This airport is a source of pride for Thais and a key force in driving the country's economy, transportation, and tourism forward in a stable and sustainable manner.
