Imran Khan and Wife Sentenced to 17 More Years in Prison in Corruption Case

Islamabad: A Pakistani court has sentenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, to an additional 17 years in prison each. This verdict is part of a corruption case involving the embezzlement of luxury state gifts, which were allegedly repurchased at significantly low prices.

According to Thai News Agency, Imran Khan, aged 73, who served as Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022, has been in prison since August 2023 on several corruption charges. Khan has consistently claimed that these charges are politically motivated.

In early December, Usma Khanum, Imran Khan's sister and the only family member permitted to visit him at Adiala Prison, reported that Khan was in good health. However, he is experiencing severe isolation and mental stress, following allegations that his family was denied visitation rights for weeks. During her visit, supporters of Khan's Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party demonstrated outside the prison, protesting the conditions of his detention.

Government officials have refuted allegations of mistreatment, asserting that Khan has received all standard prisoner rights. Deputy Interior Minister Talal Chaudhury emphasized that decisions regarding visiting rights fall under the jurisdiction of prison officials and are not influenced by the government.
