Bangkok: The opposition has formally requested the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sophon Saram, to send the emergency decree authorizing a 400 billion baht loan to the Constitutional Court for interpretation. This move aims to determine if the issuance of the decree aligns with constitutional requirements.
According to Thai News Agency, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyavuth, alongside Mr. Korn Chatikavanij, Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party, submitted a petition to the Speaker of the House. The petition asks for a constitutional review of the emergency decree that facilitates the 400 billion baht loan. The opposition is seeking clarity on the decree's adherence to constitutional mandates.
House Speaker Sophon Saram has stated that the petition will be reviewed within the legal timeframe, approximately three days, before being forwarded to the Constitutional Court. Additionally, the opposition plans to propose a motion for the establishment of an ad hoc committee to oversee the spending of the loan under the Emergency Decree. Sophon expressed his expectation that the government would not oppose this motion. He noted that if the government does not intend to conceal information, misappropriate funds, or issue blank checks, there should be no reason to reject the proposal.
