2nd Army Area Command Denies Cambodian Pressure on Luang Ta Yuen

Surin: The 2nd Army Area Command has firmly stated that there was no pressure exerted by 15 Cambodians on "Luang Ta Yuen," asserting that the Cambodians were present solely to pay their respects. Concerns were raised about road construction potentially encroaching on territorial sovereignty, but "Ajarn Pai" confirmed that discussions proceeded normally and ended amicably, countering social media speculation.

According to Thai News Agency, the 2nd Army Region addressed a video clip showing Cambodian soldiers meeting with Phra Tham Wachirayanakosol (Yuean Khantiphalo), the abbot of Wat Buraparam Royal Temple, during an inspection of road projects along the Surin Province border. The video, which has circulated widely on social media, could lead to public misunderstandings. The encounter occurred on May 9, 2026.

At around 2:20 PM, Luang Ta Yuen, along with disciples and Thai security personnel, surveyed main tactical route 2 near the Tosakan operational base. Military and border patrol officers ensured security throughout the mission.

During the survey, approximately 15 Cambodian soldiers approached Luang Ta Yuen's group out of respect, expressing concerns about the road construction potentially encroaching on their operational base.

Thai officials, along with Luang Ta Yuen, assured that the road development was within Thailand's sovereign territory, aimed at improving transportation, aiding the public, and supporting security missions. The operation had no intention of infringing on Cambodian sovereignty. Discussions concluded with mutual understanding, maintaining a friendly atmosphere.

By 4:10 PM, Luang Ta Yuen and his group safely left under Thai security.

The 2nd Army Area Command promises to protect national sovereignty and safeguard interests along the border, emphasizing the importance of coordination to prevent misunderstandings and maintain peace between the nations.

Mr. Sanguan Kongngern, known as "Ajarn Pai," present during the event and overseeing the road project, dismissed claims that Cambodians exerted pressure during the visit. He stated that their visit was respectful, involving normal conversation, without scrutiny or conflict.

He confirmed the road work was within Thailand's territory, negating rumors of encroachment or territorial loss. Reports of blockades or neighboring military pressure were also denied.

Professor Pai emphasized that the approach adheres to the principle of respecting Thailand's sovereignty without compromising it.

The border road project aims to enhance public access, develop transportation routes, and improve connectivity between border markers 1 and 14, spanning 40 kilometers to the Chong Chom border crossing, ultimately boosting transportation and the border economy long-term.
