Chinese Inmate’s Overdose Incident Sparks Heightened Security at Pattaya Hospital

Pattaya: The Corrections Department has reported that Mingchen Shan, a Chinese prisoner convicted of firearms offenses, planned to overdose on medication before being transferred to Pattaya Special Prison.

According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Corrections has issued a second update regarding the admission and emergency medical situation of Mr. Mingchen Shan. Upon his arrival at Pattaya Patumkun Hospital on May 11th, doctors conducted blood tests, a chest X-ray, and a brain CT scan to identify any abnormalities. Initial assessments suggested that Mr. Shan had overdosed on prescribed medication. Medical staff inserted a nasal tube to flush his digestive system, where they discovered a blue fluid. An antidote was administered, prompting Mr. Shan to regain movement and show signs of improved responsiveness.

As of May 12th, Mr. Shan is conscious and able to follow medical instructions but remains on a ventilator, receiving fluid nutrition through a nasogastric tube. All initial drug tests returned negative results. The hospital has dispatched blood samples for comprehensive laboratory analysis to detect substances such as alcohol, benzodiazepines, and pesticides, with official results expected by Friday or next week.

Corrections officials suspect that Mr. Shan overdosed on his prescribed medication shortly before his transfer to Pattaya Special Prison. This suspicion arises from the onset of symptoms just two hours after his formal admission to the prison, leading to his transfer to an external hospital for urgent treatment.

In response to the incident, Pattaya Special Prison has intensified its security protocols. Correctional officers are closely monitoring Mr. Shan, and additional support has been requested from Bang Lamung Police Station and the Special Operations Unit of Provincial Police Region 2 to ensure 24-hour security around the hospital premises. The Department of Corrections assures that Mr. Shan is receiving care and treatment in accordance with humanitarian and international standards.
