Saeng Boonmee Addresses Legal Actions to Safeguard Election Process

Bangkok: "Saeng" has confirmed the filing of a police report against six citizens to safeguard the integrity of the election process. The move comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings related to the barcode case, where the Election Commission is under scrutiny. Saeng, unperturbed by the potential defamation lawsuit from "Somchai," insists that the legal action is not self-serving but a measure to protect the electoral process.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Saeng Boonmee, Secretary-General of the Election Commission, explained that the Commission has submitted clarifications to the Constitutional Court concerning the use of barcodes and QR codes on ballot papers. The Court has requested these clarifications within 15 days, with five witnesses, including legal experts and a technology specialist, preparing their testimonies.

Mr. Saeng emphasized the Commission's commitment to transparency, stating, "We are fighting with the truth." He acknowledged a request from former Election Commissioner Mr. Somchai Srisutthiyakorn for 20 documents related to the barcode case, noting that some documents are already public. The Commission remains open to public scrutiny and is determined to operate within legal boundaries as the case unfolds.

The police report against six individuals remains under investigation, with formal charges yet to be filed. Mr. Saeng clarified that the charges aim to protect the election process rather than the Commission itself. The legal action is a response to disruptions affecting the electoral process, underscoring the Commission's duty to ensure election integrity.

Regarding potential defamation lawsuits from Mr. Somchai and his group, Mr. Saeng expressed no concern, citing the Commission's frequent encounters with legal challenges. He also addressed calls from the We Watch group to withdraw lawsuits against citizens protesting in Chonburi's District 1, reiterating that the Commission's actions are focused on safeguarding the electoral process for the public. The Election Commission's responsibility is to facilitate a smooth election, urging all citizens to adhere to legal regulations.
