Koh Lanta:A cultural event showcasing the unique identities of the "Sea Gypsies" and "Mani" people is set to take place on September 25-26 at Phra Ae Beach Public Park in Koh Lanta District, Krabi Province.
According to Thai News Agency, the government, through the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, is organizing this event to promote cultural tourism and stimulate the grassroots economy. The initiative aims to provide tourists with an authentic experience of the lifestyle of the Sea Gypsies and Mani people.
The event, titled "Charming of the Sea - Let's see the Mountain 2026," will feature exhibitions of traditions, arts, and culture, along with simulations of community life. Additionally, workshops demonstrating local wisdom products and booths selling community products will be available, helping to distribute income directly to the grassroots level.
A special seminar entitled "From Identity to Creative Power: A New Step Towards the Future Welfare of the Sea Gypsies and Mani People" will be held, in collaboration with the Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre and the Thai Community Foundation, featuring performances by the Aslimala and Suzu bands.
The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security aims to shift its approach from welfare to creating life security for citizens, promoting employment and income generation, and changing societal perceptions by highlighting the value of ethnic groups as human and cultural capital. The "Sea Gypsies" inhabit the western coastal areas of southern Thailand's Andaman Sea, including Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi, and Satun provinces. In contrast, the "Mani" are an ethnic group living in the Banthat Mountain Range's rainforest ecosystem across Satun, Songkhla, Phatthalung, Trang, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces.
