Foreign Nationals Arrested for Smuggling Currency at Airport

Suvarnabhumi:Two foreign nationals were arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport for attempting to smuggle US dollars equivalent to 56 million Thai baht.

According to Thai News Agency, the Customs Department has intensified efforts to combat currency smuggling. This initiative led to the arrest of a foreign passenger concealing over 56 million baht in US dollars. Dr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, has directed the Customs Department to tighten controls on the movement of currency to prevent cross-border smuggling and potential money laundering activities.

Following the directive, Customs Department officials, including Director-General Mr. Panthong Loykulnan and Advisor Ms. Nanthita Sirikup, have been instructed to enhance inspections to intercept currency smuggling at airports. On September 30, 2026, Ms. Santhani Pairatnakorn, Director of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Passenger Customs Office, reported that two foreign passengers arriving from Jakarta, Indonesia, were found with US dollar bills hidden in their luggage.

These actions violated several financial regulations, including the Ministry of Finance's Announcement on Exchange Control, the Exchange Control Act, and the Customs Act, among others. The Customs Department has increased the surveillance and inspection of high-risk passengers to prevent such activities.

Travelers are reminded to comply with all regulations related to carrying currency into or out of the country. For more information, individuals are encouraged to contact the Customs Department through its hotline, social media channels, or any customs office or checkpoint nationwide.
