Bangkok: Pol. Col. Thawee Sodsong, Minister of Justice, has clarified the role of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) in the ongoing case of alleged collusion in the selection of senators, asserting that the matter falls primarily under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission (EC).
According to Thai News Agency, Thawee emphasized that the DSI is merely assisting in its capacity as a subcommittee and is committed to following the evidence. He refuted claims made by some senators that the DSI holds a lower status, citing constitutional values of dignity and respect.
Pol. Col. Thawee explained that the EC subcommittee, with the involvement of the DSI, has issued summonses for charges related to the collusion case. He clarified that the process is managed by the EC, with procedural differences from the standard Criminal Procedure Code. In response to senators who have refused to acknowledge the charges, Thawee highlighted that the investigation methods are determined by the EC, with the DSI serving as a supportive agency. This collaboration is deemed a special case, requiring adherence to different sections of the law.
When questioned about the senators' perception of the DSI's status, Thawee remarked that maturity and respect are crucial, as protected by the constitution. He noted that people with dignity should respect others first. Thawee dismissed comments made by some senators as misunderstanding, emphasizing the importance of constitutional protections for human rights and equality.
Addressing concerns that the senator collusion case might be politically motivated, particularly in relation to the 14th floor case of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, Thawee reiterated that the Ministry of Justice operates strictly within legal boundaries. Investigations are guided by evidence and the rule of law, ensuring equal application of laws without influence overriding legal principles.
Thawee also underscored the integration of forensic evidence and technology in the investigation, emphasizing the importance of digital communication technology. When asked about potential criticisms of the DSI's procedures, Thawee stated that the EC determines the approach, and the DSI complies accordingly.
Regarding speculation that the political situation could lead to governmental instability, Thawee dismissed such notions, asserting that the ministers maintain good relationships and are committed to upholding a strong rule of law. He assured that actions taken are based on evidence and are not intended to target individuals unfairly. Thawee also mentioned that the timeline of the investigation will depend on the evidence available, as mandated by the constitution.
