Medical Council’s Resolution on Thaksin Hospitalization Case Still Pending, Says Somsak

Bangkok: Somsak Thepsuthin, the Public Health Minister, has revealed that the Medical Council has yet to reach a resolution regarding the case of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently receiving treatment on the 14th floor of the Police General Hospital. The case also involves three doctors who have been penalized, with one receiving a warning and two others facing suspension for allegedly providing false medical information.

According to Thai News Agency, Somsak mentioned that the matter had not been forwarded to him yet. He assured that if it had, he would not have intervened and expressed concurrence with the Medical Council's proceedings, which align with the ministry's standards. He noted the public interest in the case and emphasized the need to observe how those penalized would respond.

Somsak further disclosed that an assistant minister had informed him of the punished doctors' intention to seek justice through a formal letter. Upon receipt of the letter, Somsak plans to consider the appropriate course of action to ensure transparency and accountability. He emphasized that any resolution from the Medical Council would be reviewed within 15 days and reiterated his commitment to clarity in the process.

Amidst questions about potential pressure in handling the case, Somsak affirmed his dedication to addressing the issues head-on and providing clear answers. He underscored his extensive political experience since 1983 and assured that all actions would be based on reason and transparency.

When asked about the specifics of the doctors' appeals for justice, Somsak clarified that the formal letter had not yet been received, though coordination efforts were underway. He maintained his position as an impartial mediator between the Medical Council and the penalized doctors, committed to facilitating a fair resolution.

Addressing concerns about public criticism and high expectations, Somsak expressed confidence that maintaining a straightforward and reasonable approach would mitigate negative feedback. He asserted his long-standing approach to politics, characterized by fearlessness and adherence to principles.
