Cambodia to File Complaint with UN Court Over Border Disputes with Thailand: PM

Phnom Penh: Cambodia will file a complaint tomorrow with the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, over four disputed border areas with Thailand, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said last night. He identified the contested regions as Mom Bei, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Tauch Temple, and Ta Krabei Temple.

According to Nam News Network, the area known as Mom Bei, or the Emerald Triangle, is particularly significant as it is a border region shared by Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos. The move to approach the ICJ was prompted by a recent incident where soldiers from Cambodia and Thailand briefly exchanged gunfire at the Emerald Triangle on May 28, leading to the death of a Cambodian soldier.

The decision to escalate the matter to the UN court underscores the ongoing tensions and the critical nature of these border disputes. Cambodia’s appeal to the ICJ aims to seek a peaceful and legal resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the importance of international me
diation in regional disputes.
