Nakhon si thammarat: Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party and prime ministerial candidate, has expressed his deep concern over the widespread allegations of vote buying in southern Thailand. He emphasized the urgency of ending politics influenced by monetary power, showing optimism that the people in the region are beginning to resist such practices.
According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit made these remarks during an interview on January 7, 2026, at Tha Sala Prasit Suksa School in Tha Sala District. He highlighted that the increasing intensity of political competition in the southern region has brought to light concerning rumors of vote buying. However, he noted a positive shift as citizens start to voice their dissatisfaction with a political system dominated by financial influence.
Abhisit stated, "To be frank, I'm worried. The issue of vote buying is still rampant. But this time, I'm trying to communicate with all parties, and I'm glad that the people are starting to speak out themselves, saying enough is enough with a political system where money is the deciding factor."
Addressing questions about infrastructure achievements, Abhisit explained that the Democrat Party had limited opportunities to manage ministries responsible for infrastructure due to their frequent position in opposition. When in government, their focus was primarily on social welfare, leading to achievements such as the elderly allowance policy and the 15-year free education policy.
Abhisit also addressed the economic challenges faced by the people of southern Thailand, particularly the declining prices of rubber and other agricultural products. He assured that the Democrat Party is prepared to be a reliable source and representative in addressing these economic issues and delivering tangible outcomes.
