Bangkok: Anusorn Eiamsa-ard, a party-list MP from the Pheu Thai Party, has reported a favorable reaction to the proposed Entertainment Complex Business Act after visiting various areas to discuss the draft bill's content. The initiative aims to generate new income and stimulate economic growth in the country.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Anusorn spoke about the directive from Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, who encouraged MPs to engage with the public during recess to explain the draft bill. The proposal envisions the creation of a significant economic hub, with 90% of the area dedicated to a large international convention center, a world-class theme park, a sports stadium, and a large concert hall. Casinos, which have faced opposition from certain groups, would comprise only 10% of the complex and would operate under strict state control, adhering to international standards.
Anusorn emphasized that countries that have implemented similar entertainment complexes have successfully boosted their economies. The absence of such infrastructure in Thailand has resulted in missed opportunities, such as Taylor Swift not choosing Thailand for her tour due to the lack of a world-class concert hall. An entertainment complex could position Thailand as a concert hub in ASEAN, attracting major international events and boosting music tourism, while creating over 20,000 jobs per location with an average salary of no less than 25,000 baht per month.
Public perception of the project has improved as more factual information becomes available, clarifying that the initiative is not predominantly about casinos but about generating significant income for the country. The project could attract investments from both domestic and international private companies, provided there are clear rules and incentives. The government will need to establish transparent regulations to mitigate potential societal impacts, such as restricting access for individuals with deposits below 50 million baht, civil servants, and minors. The complex will also be located away from religious sites and educational institutions to minimize negative effects.
Mr. Anusorn concluded by underscoring the project's potential to create a robust economy, generate new income, and provide tangible opportunities for the future of the country.
