In the 59th minute of the second half, Everton's Dwight McNeil had a shot saved by Villa's Emiliano Martinez, but the rebound fell to Thierno Barry, who skillfully chipped the ball into the net for the match's only goal. Everton's victory earned them three points, maintaining their position in 10th place with a total of 32 points. Villa, on the other hand, remained in 3rd place with 43 points.

Following the match, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery expressed his disappointment with the result but commended his team's overall performance, emphasizing the need to regain confidence ahead of their upcoming Europa League game. Emery remained hopeful for a strong performance in the midweek European fixture.
