Bangkok Introduces Shared Chairs for Relaxation at Benjakitti Park

Bangkok: "Tired? Take a break." Bangkok is experimenting with shared chairs for relaxation by the pool at Benjakitti Park. Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt inspected a trial placement of canvas chairs under the concept of "Chair for Sharing," or what Governor Chatchart called "Rest When You're Tired," at the poolside area near Gate 1 of Benjakitti Park in Khlong Toei district.

According to Thai News Agency, Governor Chatchart stated that this project is an experiment in creating a new type of urban resting area. He noted that the area has a high density of offices, leaving company employees and the general public with limited spaces to relax or rest during the day. Therefore, Bangkok drew inspiration from other countries and adapted the concept, placing canvas chairs in Benjakitti Park to provide a free space for people who feel tired to take a nap or relax. These chairs were donated and did not use government funds.

For usage, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has established "sharing chair" rules to ensure order and equitable access for all users. People are asked to limit their seating to a maximum of 30 minutes per person to allow others to use the space as well. Additionally, users are advised not to move the chairs out of the area to maintain order and prevent loss, and to help maintain cleanliness for the good hygiene of the community.

Governor Chatchart added that this initial phase will be a system test, collecting data and feedback from actual users. If it receives positive feedback and the public helps to maintain the parks, it will be expanded to other public parks, such as Lumpini Park, to provide more resting areas for Bangkok residents.
