Bhumjaithai Party Clarifies Stance on Land Bridge Project, Emphasizes Public Opinion and Cost-Effectiveness

Bangkok: The Bhumjaithai Party has provided a detailed explanation of the proposed land bridge project, emphasizing that it will not proceed if studies reveal it is not cost-effective or if there is insufficient public support.

According to Thai News Agency, the Bhumjaithai Party issued a statement on its Facebook page to clarify the status of the Land Bridge project. The post, titled "Cleared Up! Bhumjaithai's Version of the 'Land Bridge' Project: Dispelling Rumors and Misinformation," included an infographic that addressed various misconceptions, particularly concerning the SEC Act and its relation to the project.

The statement clarified misunderstandings about the Land Bridge project and the SEC Act, explaining that the draft SEC Act was abandoned two terms ago and has no current legal implications regarding the new Land Bridge project. At present, the project is undergoing a feasibility study and cost-benefit analysis, with no construction or investment initiated.

The project's objectives, if pursued, include promoting Thailand as a regional logistics hub, reducing sea shipping time, enhancing competitiveness, and fostering long-term economic growth. It also aims to create jobs and increase the country's economic value. The impact study committee, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Mr. Ekniti Nitithanprapas, has a 90-day timeframe to conduct its analysis.

The Bhumjaithai Party has assured that if a study determines the project is not cost-effective or lacks local support, it will not proceed. The decision will heavily rely on public opinion.

Additionally, the statement addressed misinformation, confirming that foreign nationals cannot lease land for 99 years, casinos and illegal businesses are prohibited, and no 1 trillion baht investment budget has been allocated, apart from funds for feasibility studies.

The Bhumjaithai Party reiterated its commitment to developing the southern region with integrity and respect for public opinion. It also warned that legal action could be taken against those who spread false information or defame the party.
