Bangkok: The Cabinet has approved the proposal to register Ubon Ratchathani Geopark as a UNESCO World Geopark, showcasing its Sam Phan Bok formation, fossils, and local culture on the global stage. According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, disclosed that the Cabinet endorsed the proposal from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to apply for UNESCO Global Geopark status for Ubon Ratchathani Geopark. This initiative aims to elevate Thailand's geological, natural, and cultural heritage to international recognition, fostering opportunities for tourism, education, and sustainable community-based economic development. Ms. Lalida explained that UNESCO Global Geoparks focus on conserving and promoting geological, archaeological, ecological, and cultural heritage sites while supporting sustainable development by involving local communities in resource management. Currently, there are 229 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 50 countries worldwid e, with Thailand already home to Satun Global Geopark and Nakhon Ratchasima Global Geopark. Khon Kaen Global Geopark is also under consideration for certification. Ubon Ratchathani Geopark spans approximately 1,829 square kilometers across four districts: Pho Thrai, Si Mueang Mai, Khong Chiam, and Sirindhorn. It features internationally recognized geological formations, particularly those created by the erosion of the Mekong River, such as the "Sam Phan Bok" rock formation, steep cliffs, and rock pillars. The area is also a significant fossil site within the Khok Kruat Formation, where fossils of dinosaurs, flying reptiles, ancient crocodiles, and Cretaceous vertebrates have been found, marking it as one of Thailand's most biodiverse historical areas. Additionally, the geopark holds unique archaeological value, reflecting the lifestyles, cultures, and local wisdom in the region. This includes traditional activities like the "Tak Pla Pak Bong" game, the culture of communities along the Mekong River, and the ethnic groups residing in the area, demonstrating the connection between nature, history, and the local way of life. Ms. Lalida noted that Ubon Ratchathani Geopark was declared a local geopark in 2011 and became a certified Thailand Geopark in 2023. It has a well-established management system and a coordination center based at the Ubon Ratchathani Provincial Administrative Organization. The National Geopark Committee has approved its application for UNESCO certification due to its geological knowledge, area management, community involvement, and development potential. Thailand plans to express its intent to UNESCO by July 1, 2026, and submit the official application documents between October 1 and November 30, 2026. This will precede UNESCO experts' review and site assessment process. Ms. Lalida emphasized that achieving Global Geopark certification will increase international awareness of Thailand's natural and cultural resources, attract tourists and academics worldwide, and generate economic opportuniti es for local communities. It also promotes the conservation of natural resources and geological heritage in line with sustainable development, marking a significant step in showcasing Thailand's capabilities in the balanced and sustainable management of natural resources on the global stage.
