Phnom penh: "Big Kung," a high-ranking Cambodian official, has criticized the Cambodian government's alleged use of artificial intelligence to fabricate news, accusing it of making deception a habitual practice. The controversy centers on claims that AI-generated fake news was used to dispute reports of Thai soldiers reclaiming Hill 350.
According to Thai News Agency, the tensions escalated after Thailand released images and news showing Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, an advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Army and former commander of the 2nd Army Area, visiting Ta Kwai Temple and Hill 350 in Surin Province. The visit was intended to honor and support soldiers who had successfully defended the area. The images depicted him offering encouragement and essential supplies to the troops.
However, Cambodian media allegedly countered these reports with AI-generated content, disputing the authenticity of Thailand's claims. They accused Thailand of staging the images in a studio, suggesting that the Thai public had been misled by their own government and military. This AI-generated content was widely circulated on social media, with Cambodian citizens expressing gratitude to those who purportedly unveiled the truth.
Lieutenant General Boonsin responded by asserting that the claims made by Cambodian media are typical of the country's refusal to accept reality. He emphasized that his team possesses video footage of his presence on the ground, reinforcing the authenticity of the images. He criticized Cambodia for its habitual deception of its own people.
