Modena: Eight people were injured after a car rammed into a crowd in Italy. A car plowed into pedestrians in Modena, northern Italy, leaving at least eight people injured, four of them seriously.
According to Thai News Agency, CCTV footage shows the car, likely traveling at over 100 kilometers per hour, speeding through an intersection on a street in Modena. The driver then deliberately accelerated and drove onto the sidewalk, plowing into a crowd. Several victims were struck and thrown by the car before it veered off course and crashed into the glass windows of a shop. After the crash, the driver got out of the car, brandishing a knife, and attempted to flee. A group of Good Samaritans chased and subdued him, handing him over to the police. One Good Samaritan sustained minor injuries while trying to disarm the assailant.
This car crash has left at least eight people injured, including German and Polish tourists. Four of them are in critical condition. One woman was reportedly crushed against a shop window and required surgery to amputate both her legs to save her life.
Local media reported that the perpetrator was a man in his early 30s, of Italian-Moroccan descent, residing in Modena province. He was currently unemployed and had no prior criminal record, but had a history of receiving treatment for a mental illness since 2022, which he had not continued. Initial medical examinations revealed no evidence of drug or alcohol use.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni posted a message on the X platform expressing his concern and sending encouragement to the injured and their families. He also thanked the group of Good Samaritans for their courageous intervention in quelling the incident and apprehending the perpetrator. Police and security agencies are currently investigating the true motive, and there is no information linking the incident to extremist groups or terrorist organizations.
