Chalermchai Outlines Anti-Corruption Measures for Park Revenue Amidst Allegations

Bangkok: Mr. Chalermchai Sri-on, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE), addressed corruption allegations concerning park entrance fees during the Democrat Party's 2025 annual general meeting. He emphasized the presence of a principled system for utilizing these revenues, dismissing any claims of personal gain. In a bid to enhance transparency, Mr. Chalermchai announced the forthcoming implementation of an E-Ticket system next month, aimed at curbing corruption in revenue collection, with expectations of generating 4-5 billion baht.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chalermchai, who has been in office for seven months alongside Mr. Decha Isara Khaothong, deputy minister of public health, stressed the importance of efficiency within the MNRE. He urged civil servants to expedite processes, particularly in utilizing forest areas and public utilities, to prevent budgetary constraints from hindering progress. He underscored the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as a priority, citing significant revenue growth from 1.6-1.7 billion baht last year to an estimated 2.2 billion baht in 2025.

Mr. Chalermchai elaborated on the structured allocation of collected funds, with 600 million baht earmarked for specific expenditures and the remainder dedicated to park welfare, renovations, and necessary purchases. He highlighted the upcoming E-Ticket and E-Service systems as pivotal anti-corruption tools, supported by a 38 million baht contribution from the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and additional funding from the National Park Department.

The minister also announced enhancements to welfare benefits for National Park Department officials, with compensation for death, disability, and serious injuries set to increase significantly. Enhancements will ensure all parks feature accessible architecture for individuals with disabilities, and visiting tourists will receive insurance coverage.

Addressing concerns over marine park revenues, particularly those from the Andaman Sea, Mr. Chalermchai emphasized the need for rigorous safety inspections of boats, especially those over ten years old, following a substantial 26 million baht budget allocation for a new inspection vessel.

Mr. Chalermchai concluded by reaffirming his commitment to transparency and development, assuring the public and party members of his dedication to utilizing park revenues for upgrading facilities and supporting officials, rather than personal enrichment. He expressed a desire to clarify misconceptions and provide factual information regarding his efforts to combat corruption.
