Director-General Leads Efforts to Monitor and Address Flood Situation in Chiang Rai

Chiang Rai: The Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) is taking proactive measures to address the ongoing flood situation in Chiang Rai Province. At the forefront of this initiative, Mr. Phasakorn Boonyalak, the Director-General, has emphasized the necessity for urgent action to mitigate the impact on affected residents and has called for an integrated approach among all sectors to prepare for potential flood disasters.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phasakorn chaired a meeting attended by key stakeholders, including Mr. Charin Thongsuk, Governor of Chiang Rai Province, Mr. Chairat Kaewpiangpen, Deputy Director-General of DDPM, and various local government officials. The meeting, conducted via teleconference, aimed at evaluating the current flood situation and strategizing on providing necessary assistance to those affected.

Mr. Phasakorn highlighted that the Meteorological Department announced the onset of Thailand's rainy season on May 15, 2025, with an expected five percent increase in total rainfall compared to the average. This increase poses a risk of tropical storms, potentially leading to heavy rainfall and subsequent flash floods, forest runoff, and river overflows. In response, Prime Minister Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra has tasked Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul with closely monitoring the situation and coordinating assistance efforts.

During a recent visit to Mae Sai District, Mr. Phasakorn observed a reduction in water levels, though continuous rainfall remains a concern. He advised local authorities to remain vigilant, closely monitor weather conditions, and communicate effectively with residents through various channels to ensure timely warnings and preparedness.

Mr. Phasakorn also outlined that the National Disaster Warning Center is actively involved in 24-hour monitoring and collaboration with multiple agencies to assess and communicate risks effectively. He emphasized the importance of accurate information and swift local response to ensure effective warnings and minimize impact.

In terms of resource allocation, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center, Region 15, has been deployed to support affected areas. Mr. Phasakorn has instructed additional resources from the Central region to be on standby, ready to assist the Northern region if necessary.

Addressing the issue of arsenic contamination in the Kok River, Mr. Phasakorn noted that discussions are underway with relevant agencies to prioritize public health and safety. Efforts include collaboration with the Pollution Control Department and Waterworks Authority to address contamination and ensure water quality.

Mr. Phasakorn concluded by emphasizing the increased frequency and severity of disasters due to climate change, urging for continuous preparedness, coordination, and unified action across all sectors to effectively manage and respond to disasters, thereby minimizing their impact on affected communities.
