First Army Region’s Strategic Operations Amid Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions

Bangkok: The First Army Region Commander provided an in-depth explanation of the strategic operations employed during the Thai-Cambodian conflict, emphasizing national dignity and interests while urging public confidence in the First Army.

According to Thai News Agency, Lt. Gen. Amorn Boonsuya, Commander of the First Army Region, clarified several key issues following the RBC meeting. He affirmed the use of a consistent 1:50,000 scale map with the Second Army Region, highlighting differences in terrain between the regions. While the Second Army Region is characterized by the Phanom Dong Rak mountain range, the First Army Region features large border communities. Personnel are equipped to monitor the boundary markers from 28-51, supported by live camera and drone footage.

Lt. Gen. Amrit acknowledged unresolved boundary markers, leading to the MOU 43 agreement between the two governments, ensuring no alterations until mutual resolution. Modern tools accepted by both nations aid in maintaining clarity and accuracy. The focus will shift to policy-level implementations.

Amidst the First Army Area operations, tensions have persisted in the Second Army Area since February 2015, escalating with incidents like the Ta Muang Thom Temple national anthem provocations and bombings. A military operation on July 24th saw both sides boost manpower and equipment. By July 26th, the First Army Area had mobilized units and completed the operation without retaliation, citing stronger Thai forces. The opening of a new battle zone beyond the Second Army Area would be seen as a declaration of war, causing public suffering and necessitating evacuations, as seen in the northeastern region where 100,000 people were evacuated.

In the Ban Nong Chan area, the Commander confirmed efforts to push back Cambodian troops without conflict, using barbed wire for self-defense. He clarified that this was not intended as a border marker. The area, between boundary markers 46 and 47, lacks markers and is flat, necessitating the use of barbed wire.

Security at checkpoints in Sa Kaeo Province, unrelated to Chanthaburi and Trat, was addressed, with closures preceding the conflict under CCSD tactics. This operation aims to disrupt financial routes and logistics for Cambodia, impacting scammer gangs affecting Thailand and beyond. The First Army Region's operations reflect carefully considered strategies and tactical principles.

The First Army Region reiterates its commitment to preserving democracy, national interests, and citizen safety, urging public confidence in its actions.
