Bangkok: Floods and landslides from Tropical Cyclone Ditwah have resulted in the deaths of at least 69 individuals, according to Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre (DMC). The storm struck the northern region of the country, causing widespread destruction.
According to Thai News Agency, most fatalities occurred due to landslides, which were triggered by heavy rainfall exceeding 300 millimeters in the eastern and central parts of Sri Lanka. The disaster has had a significant impact on nearly 44,000 residents nationwide, forcing many to seek refuge in schools and public shelters.
The Royal Irrigation Department has issued a warning that the flooding, which has already impacted large swathes of southern and eastern Sri Lanka, including areas within Colombo, is anticipated to expand further. The situation remains dire as authorities work to manage the aftermath of the storm.
