Bangkok: A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed uncertainty regarding former US President Donald Trump's commitment to Thai-Cambodian peace efforts, particularly after missing out on the Nobel Peace Prize. The spokesperson highlighted that Trump's intentions were initially positive, but it remains unclear if his interest would wane following the Nobel outcome. He called on major powers to encourage Cambodia to adhere to Thailand's four conditions to foster peace.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nikorndej Plankul, who serves as the Director-General of the Department of Information and the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed concerns about whether Trump's failure to secure the Nobel Peace Prize might affect his dedication to mediating Thai-Cambodian peace negotiations. Mr. Plankul noted that while the initiative was well-intentioned and aimed at achieving peace, it is uncertain if the lack of a Nobel accolade would diminish US involvement. He emphasized Thailand's appreciation for the goodwill extended, adding that the outcome of the prize should not necessarily correlate with the commitment to peace efforts.
Mr. Plankul also urged major global powers to assist in promoting Thailand's four conditions for Cambodia. These include the withdrawal of heavy weapons, mine clearance, suppression of call centers, and efficient border management. He expressed confidence that Cambodia's cooperation in these areas would contribute positively to the peace process.
