Bangkok: Fourteen US states are preparing for a severe winter storm expected to sweep across the country throughout the weekend. The U.S. government and residents are gearing up for a significant weather event that will bring frigid Arctic air to much of the United States.
According to Thai News Agency, two-thirds of the eastern country are anticipated to experience heavy snow, hail, and freezing rain, which could impact travel and cause power outages. At least 14 states, including Washington, have declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather. Governments have issued severe weather warnings and advisories extending from the Rocky Mountains in the south to the mid-Atlantic coast and New England, affecting more than 200 million people.
In New York City, authorities are stockpiling large quantities of salt to combat icy roads and prevent slippery conditions. Preparations are also in place for potential power outages and other disruptions. Snowfall is expected to reach between 4 and 8 inches on Sunday in cities like Washington, D.C., Baltimore, New York City, and Boston, with some areas potentially receiving over 12 inches.
In Arlington, Texas, the military has set up shelters for the homeless to provide beds, heating, food, and emotional support during the freezing weather. Authorities are urging the public to monitor news from local agencies and seek assistance at these shelters as needed.
The public is also taking measures to prepare, with individuals stocking up on food, water, essential supplies, and generators. Supermarkets are crowded with people rushing to purchase groceries, leading to many items selling out quickly, especially eggs, bacon, and butter. Many residents have decided to stay indoors over the weekend, opting to make hot soup at home. Some anticipate that the adverse weather might confine them indoors for up to a week, provided there are no power outages. Those who can afford it are advised to stock up on food supplies.
