Japanese Tourist Apologizes After Confrontation with Chiang Mai Police Over Sky Lantern

CHIANG MAI: A Japanese tourist, who attempted to release a prohibited sky lantern on Kotchasan Road in Chiang Mai, was involved in an altercation with a police officer. The incident escalated when the tourist grabbed the officer by the collar, prompting a call for an interpreter to resolve the misunderstanding. The tourist later apologized, and the police officer was praised for his patience and professionalism.

According to Thai News Agency, the episode unfolded amidst a crowd of foreign tourists when Pol. Lt. Thaweesak Wongchai of the Chiang Mai City Police Station intervened to prevent the tourist from releasing the lantern. Despite the officer's efforts, the tourist resisted, leading to a physical confrontation. The tourist eventually understood the situation with the help of a Japanese interpreter and offered an apology, which was accepted by the officer.

The altercation, which took place at around 12:30 a.m. on January 1, 2015, quickly gained attention on social media, with many praising the officer's conduct. The incident highlighted the dangers of releasing sky lanterns in the area, where such activities are banned due to fire risks.

Pol. Col. Prachaya Thitla from the Chiang Mai City Police Station reported that both the tourist and his parents expressed their apologies. Pol. Lt. Thaweesak chose not to press charges, viewing the incident as a communication misunderstanding. He emphasized the importance of clear communication to prevent such occurrences in the future.

In recognition of his calm demeanor, Pol. Lt. Gen. Kritthapol Yisakorn, Commander of Provincial Police Region 5, awarded Pol. Lt. Thaweesak 10,000 baht. This award is part of the Do Good, Get Rewards initiative by the Royal Thai Police, aimed at encouraging officers to perform their duties with patience and dedication, thereby fostering a positive image of the police force.
