PHANG NGA: Residents of Bang Muang Subdistrict in Phang Nga Province participated in a traditional merit-making event by floating boats to ward off bad luck and welcome the new year 2568. This ceremony, practiced by the Moken villagers for hundreds of years, aligns with the local New Year's Day celebrations.
According to Thai News Agency, the District Chief of Takua Pa presided over the event at Bang Sak Beach, attended by a large gathering of locals. The ceremony involves floating boats filled with offerings such as rice, dried food, flowers, incense sticks, candles, nail clippings, hair clippings, and pieces of clothing. This ritual is believed to ward off bad luck and bring peace and prosperity to the villagers. Buddhist monks are invited to chant during the event to help dispel evil spirits.
Each year, children of local families who work in other provinces return home to participate in the ceremony. This annual gathering serves to preserve and pass on the rich traditions and cultural heritage of the Moken ethnic group to future generations.
