Nakhon phanom: Nakhon Phanom faces a tense situation as the Mekong River nears a critical point, with only 2 cm remaining. Residents have been warned to prepare and move belongings to higher ground to prevent damage.
According to Thai News Agency, the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom has reached a concerning level, rising to 11.98 meters, just 2 centimeters below the critical point. Relevant agencies have issued warnings to the public, especially those living in low-lying areas and along the riverbanks, urging them to prepare and relocate belongings to higher ground to mitigate potential damage.
The Meteorological Department indicated that Nakhon Phanom Province remains at risk of heavy rainfall due to the influence of the monsoon trough and the southwest monsoon. The highest accumulated rainfall was recorded in Na Thom District at 60.4 millimeters and Ban Phaeng District at 30.0 millimeters. Heavy rainfall is expected in some areas from August 12-15, which may cause the Mekong River level to rise continuously. Although the intensity of rainfall may decrease after August 15, thunderstorms are expected to persist until at least August 17.
Due to the very high water levels, if heavy rain falls in the upper Mekong River basin over the next 2-3 days, it could cause the river to overflow its banks and flood the area immediately. Therefore, residents of Nakhon Phanom are urged to closely monitor official announcements and be prepared to respond 24 hours a day.
