Bangkok: The Minister of Labour has confirmed ongoing coordination efforts with Thai nationals in the Middle East, ensuring that assistance will be provided for those wishing to return to Thailand. The Department of Skills Development is also set to enhance skills and facilitate business matching for returning Thais.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Treenuch Thianthong, the Minister of Labour, addressed concerns regarding Thai workers in the Middle East. She stated that both the Ministry of Labour and the Prime Minister have engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant bodies. Coordination is underway to assist Thai citizens desiring to return home, with some already making their way back.
Ms. Treenuch highlighted that fewer than 100 Thai workers in Israel have expressed a desire to return. Meanwhile, in Iran, the Prime Minister has urged for all Thai workers to return due to safety concerns, as Iran is considered a target for potential attacks. The overall number of Thai workers in the Middle East who wish to return is under 200.
In response to the escalating conflict affecting countries like Lebanon and Kuwait, the Ministry is working diligently. Labour attach©s are coordinating with Thai citizens to ensure their safe return. Most Thai workers in these regions are employed in agriculture and construction. Given the military focus of current conflicts, the number of Thais looking to return remains low, with the majority situated in Israel. Ms. Treenuch reassured that the Ministry is prepared to facilitate repatriation upon request.
As for the care of returning Thai workers, Ms. Treenuch mentioned that the Department of Skill Development will offer skills training for those awaiting repatriation. For those opting to remain in Thailand, the Department of Employment will match them with job opportunities in relevant industries. While no workers have expressed a desire to remain in Thailand so far, major labor unions have been tasked with supporting Thai families abroad, alleviating their concerns, and ensuring them of the government's continued support.
