Ministry of Sports Launches “Prime Minister’s Youth Cup” to Boost Youth Sports

Bangkok: The Ministry of Sports has announced the launch of the "Prime Minister's Youth Cup" project, aiming to enhance youth sports competitions across the nation, focusing initially on football and volleyball, with an anticipated participation of over 1 million young athletes.

According to Thai News Agency, the announcement was made by Mr. Surasak Panjaroenvorakul, Minister of Tourism and Sports, during a significant collaboration event. He was joined by Mrs. Prodpran Samanmit, Deputy Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand for Professional Sports and Boxing; Mrs. Nualphan Lamsam, President of the Football Association of Thailand; and Mr. Somporn Chaibangyang, President of the Volleyball Association of Thailand. The competition will initially cover two sports, football and volleyball, across six different age groups. Boys' football competitions will be held for under 14, 16, and 18 years old, utilizing a four-stage competition system starting at the district level to select provincial champions.

The U18 women's football league will be conducted in a regional league format, while boys' and girls' volleyball competitions will cater to the under-15 age group in both sports. This initiative aims to build towards a national level to create a continuous and standardized athlete development system. Mr. Surasak emphasized the project's goal to foster youth sports competitions within the country, develop athletes from the grassroots level, and connect various regions. This initiative is viewed as a tangible opportunity for Thai youth to pursue professional athletic careers and possibly join the Thai national team.

The registration for youth volleyball opens on August 20th, with more information available on the Volleyball Association of Thailand fan page. Similarly, for football details, the FA Thailand fan page will provide updates.

Additionally, Mr. Surasak addressed the Japan Football Association's (JFA) proposal to collaborate with four ASEAN nations, including Thailand, to bid for hosting the 2046 FIFA World Cup. Although no formal proposal has been submitted, he stated that he would present the matter to the Cabinet should it be pursued, considering the potential benefits to the country.

In related news, the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) Board has selected Ms. Proadpran Samanmit, Deputy Governor of SAT for Professional Sports and Boxing, as the new SAT Governor. Mr. Surasak announced that the next step involves seeking Cabinet approval, with expectations for the process to be completed by the end of August.
