Myanmar Earthquake Causes Evacuation in Bangkok’s Anti-Money Laundering Office

Bangkok: Bangkok residents were alerted by tremors felt in several locations across Bangkok, including the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), where people were evacuated from buildings following the earthquake in Myanmar.

According to Thai News Agency, a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of Myanmar, near the mouth of the Irrawaddy River and close to Yangon, at 9:05 AM this morning. The tremors were felt in several areas of Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, particularly by those in high-rise buildings who reported buildings swaying and lamplights swinging.

Initial reports indicate that the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) building felt the tremors strongly. Officials quickly evacuated personnel from the building for safety and inspected the building's structure and internal systems. Although the epicenter was far from Thailand, the soft clay soil of Bangkok caused the tremors to be amplified, making them felt by residents in many areas.
