Bangkok: The earthquake in Myanmar is still receiving aftershocks, but no tsunami has occurred. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning about an earthquake measuring 5.3 magnitude near the southern coast of Myanmar, followed by a 3.2 magnitude aftershock in the early hours of this morning. People in western Thailand, as well as those in high-rise buildings in Bangkok and surrounding areas, may have felt slight tremors. There are no reports of damage in Thailand, and no tsunami warning has been issued.
According to Thai News Agency, the Meteorological Department's announcement regarding an earthquake near the southern coast of Myanmar states that at 04:15 AM on May 18, 2026, the Earthquake Monitoring Division of the Meteorological Department detected an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 near the southern coast of Myanmar, at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, about 247 kilometers from Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand.
Later, at 4:18 AM, an aftershock measuring 3.2 magnitude was detected in the same area. The Meteorological Department stated that people in areas near the western border, as well as those residing in high-rise buildings in Bangkok and surrounding areas, may have felt slight tremors.
However, there are currently no reports of damage in Thailand, and no situation requiring a cell broadcast alert, nor is there any risk of a tsunami from this incident.
